CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

My light bulb moment occurred in aisle twenty-four. I should have picked up a basket. On entering the store, I first hit the deli, where I grabbed a sandwich and a bottle of fresh orange juice. I then searched out the small electrical items, halfway along aisle twenty-four, bang in the center of the supermarket. Light bulbs were next to plug adapters and torches.

A low lumen, LED mini globe bulb with a small screw fitting, the boss had asked for, and I found the very thing. Perfect for a small cupboard that required instant illumination.

With my three items in hand, I don't know why, but I walked away from the cash desks, which lay beyond the vast world of cleaning products.

I went, further along aisle twenty-four, with men's toiletries one side and family pharmaceuticals the other. Like a man possessed, I found myself gazing at shelves of condoms.

Joe was on my mind; he's my obsession. We'd not yet done anything that required condoms; not even talked about it. In fact, we'd only been dating for four weeks and in that time we'd only got inside each other's underwear on thirteen separate days.

For most of the past week, we'd not spoken after I seriously messed up. We'd gotten over that hiccup in our romance after I came out to my family. That was quite important as we both lived with our parents just across the street from each other.

I turned up at Joe's house on Thursday night—otherwise known as last night—with too many bunches of flowers. He wasn't impressed by the bouquets; he didn't say anything about them but I could tell.

I also promised to always introduce him as my boyfriend. I was, no am, proud of him, not ashamed. I didn't want to behave as if he were a dirty secret. That may have been a rash promise on my part but I meant it at the time.

I didn't tell Joe that I was madly in love with him. That seemed a little much, and I was scared to acknowledge those feelings.

By the time we fell asleep in the early hours of Friday morning—this morning—all in our garden was rosy and we were back to boyfriends-a-go-go. After six days of abstinence, we still had a lot of physical making up to do.

Flowers didn't make him smile; I wondered if he'd be more impressed by condoms. Turning up for a weekend with a box of condoms, while his parents were away, and the good news that I'd canceled my Saturday work. That couldn't fail to impress. Even without a purple sparkling ginormous sized sex toy.

"Aaron."

You don't want to hear your own name called by a familiar voice, no matter how friendly, when you've just picked up the biggest box of condoms off the shelf and you don't know which brand to buy.

If my hand wasn't outstretched, I could've turned around, pretended that I'd only glanced at the condoms. Or I was looking at the higher shelf at whatever was up there.
